Fashion Fix: The 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards

As I've said before, I'm a sucker for an awards ceremony, and the Emmys are no exception. The Emmys honour the best of American TV. It's a very important night for many people, so it's only natural that people, especially the girls, want to look their best. Like TV shows, in Emmys fashion, there are hits, but unfortunately there are also misses. I really struggled to narrow down my Top 5 and Bottom 3 looks this year, so I have included a couple of Honourable Mentions.

BEST DRESSED

Padma Lakshmi

Since I'm being honest here, I will admit that I didn't actually know who Padma was before I watched the Emmys. But I certainly won't forget now that she's blown me away with this incredible dress! Padma looks radiant in this tangerine coloured Monique Lhuillier gown. The shape suits her gorgeous skin tone and body shape. I'm not normally a fan of the flared-mermaid silhouette, it totally works on this dress. The minimal use of jewellery also makes this dress a standout.

Claire Danes

Claire wasn't just a winner on the red carpet- the talented actress took home the Emmy for Most Outstanding Actress in a Drama. The pregnant star gives off a gorgeous maternal glow in this Lanvin dress. I cannot get over how striking the colour of this dress is- while many yellow dresses don't work, this one works perfectly. The interesting shape is probably what makes it so special. Once again, barely any jewellery and a simple hairdo have contributed to this looks' success.

Lucy Liu

There were many risk takers on the red carpet at the Emmys, and Lucy Liu was definitely one of them. This silver Atalier Versace dress could have very easily not worked, but Lucy made it shine. This unique dress complimented Lucy's gorgeous figure, and worked perfectly with her delightfully pale skin. The flash of red on the clutch gives this look a pop of colour. What I love most about this dress is all of the different textures that are on this dress, that all come together harmoniously and make this dress look wonderful.

Jessica Pare

The best thing about this dress is its simplicity. This gorgeous white Jason Wu design shows off Jessica's body in all the right places. The crossover ruching at the top and the skinny black belt add a slight detail to the dress, without overpowering it and making it look too busy. The gorgeous updo and sexy red lipstick give this dress a real 1950s vibe. The turquoise ring adds a cheeky pop of colour to this gorgeous look, making her look even more glamorous.

Ariel Winter

Seeing as this blog is aimed at teenage girls, I decided to include one in my top 5 looks, so my younger readers could gain some inspiration.
I think I wasn't the only one who was shocked by Ariel Winter's Emmy dress last year when she was 13- it was entirely open at the front, way too revealing for a 13 year old. This year, Ariel has definitely improved- this gorgeous Katherine Kidd dress is entirely age appropriate. It's modest, but also makes Ariel look not like a little girl, but like a young woman. The silhouette of this gown is gorgeous, as is the pattern. Her simple hair and makeup also make this look even better.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Julianne Moore (Christian Dior)

Leslie Mann (Naeem Khan)

WORST DRESSED

Lena Dunham

This Prada dress does nothing for Lena. The dress itself is extremely bulky, and the high waisted cut does nothing for Lena's gorgeous body which we know exists under this disastrous gown.
The pattern on the dress is extremely boring, and the dress lacks the "wow factor" that we look for in an Emmys dress.

Julianna Margulies

I was actually a bit taken aback when I saw Julianna in this dress- she usually looks so glamorous! The dress is a total let down- it is flimsy, cheap looking, and the fabric looks like it was made out of old curtains. Its not just the dress that was a let down- a visible bikini tan line and a boring hairdo also contributed to the failure of this outfit. Disappointing for a woman who looked radiant at the 2011 Emmys.

Ashley Judd

This Carolina Herrera dress is a little bit too youthful for Ashley and is more suitable for a Prom Queen than an Emmy nominee. I really dislike the bow on the back of the neck, and the bow on the waist widens her hips. If there was no belt, the dress would "flow" more from top to bottom and flatter her curves more. The fabric is also quite flimsy, making it look cheap.

diy delight

I came across a DIY tutorial for elbow patches, which I have this insane obsession with. I definitely have to do this in the not too distant future. Checkit ya'll!

(credits to leblogdesushi)
You’ll need:♥ a wool sweater
♥ a 36 gauge felting needle
♥ a piece of dense foam cut to size or needle mat
♥ some wool roving
♥ a 3″ heart cookie cutter
♥ an iron

With the sweater on, place a piece of tape about half an inch below the elbow. Do the same with the opposite elbow. Remove the sweater and insert the foam block into one of the sleeves.

Align and center the bottom of the cookie cutter along the top of the tape. Pinch off a few tufts of wool roving.

Fill the cutter, spreading out the wool fibers evenly.

At the base of all felting needles are tiny, sharp burrs, which grab and interlock the wool fibers. While holding the needle vertically, repeatedly stab it into the wool roving and through the sweater. Work around the outer perimeter of the cutter first and then work my way inwards.Important tip: To prevent breaking the needle, always keep the needle upright and never at an angle.

Remove the cutter and use the tip of the needle to reign in any stray fibers. Don’t worry about the holes as they will be fixed later. Patch up any bare or uneven spots by adding more wool roving where needed.

Carefully peel the sweater away from the foam. Notice that the fibers have transferred through to the backside of the sweater. To smooth and set the patch, spritz with water and press with an iron on the wool setting.

Repeat the same steps on the other sleeve and you're done!

the return

How good it feels to be back!!
Hello to my lovely, loyal readers! I apologise for the long (extremely long) hiatus- school work and co curricular activities was getting to be too much, so I unfortunately lost some time to blog. I wish I had given you notice first. But for those who did stick around, thanks a lot, and I'm back!
I should probably tell you what has happened to me during the last 4 months. I had my Theatre Studies production at school, which was incredibly time consuming, but so worthwhile, and it has equipped me with great skills that will undoubtedly be of benefit in the future.
During the holidays, I was a madricha (leader) at a Habonim Dror (a Socialist jewish youth movement) winter camp, which was one of the best experiences of my life. It was quite astounding when I realised that the innocent Grade 5 kids that I led taught me as much as I taught them.
As for school, well its same same. Boring, demanding, hard work. But I've only got about a year to go, which is a scary but pleasing thought! I've also been doing a VET Fashion design & Technology Course at Kangan Batman TAFE in Richmond, which is one of my Year 12 subjects. This has also really provided me with great knowledge about the design and production of garments. Whether it is a potential career for me is unknown at this point, but its definitely further instilled a love of fashion and the fashion industry!
So basically, to conclude, I am going to try my very hardest to not neglect my blog again! Once again, reader feedback is important to me, comment below or send me a message! You can follow me on Twitter too- just click the link at the top of my blog.
Thanks guys, keep reading!!
